Human impacts and introduced species excursion
Earth and Environmental Science
This fieldwork investigates how introduced species and other human impacts have affected the functioning of the environments at Field of Mars Reserve and investigates select management practices that may be used to control and mitigate these effects and increase the resilience of the environments.
Inquiry questions
- What are the effects of introduced species on the environments at the Field of Mars Reserve?
- How have human activities allowed the spread of these introduced species?
- How can these effects of introduced species be controlled and mitigated, now and in the future?
- What methodologies and data sources are required for a valid and reliable
- survey of the introduced species at the Field of Mars Reserve?
Students will work in small groups to undertake scientific fieldwork at varied study sites chosen to highlight the challenges faced by land managers who are responsible for managing the effects of introduced species (and other human impacts) on the bushland. Students will be supported to co-plan a fieldwork investigation that collects data and information in order to assess whether the reserve's land management practices have been successful over time.
