This fieldwork takes place in an area of bushland called Sugarloaf Hill.
The Sugarloaf area is part of the Lane Cove National Park which exists for the purposes of biological conservation, public enjoyment, and as a site for valuable scientific research.
Lane Cove National Park is surrounded by urban development and much of The Sugarloaf was damaged prior to the area becoming a national park. Despite these past and current human impacts the area is reasonably well preserved.
The area contains numerous ecosystems which provide for the habitat needs of native species of flora and fauna. Some of these are declared threatened species such as the red-crowned toadlet. Other animals such as the long-nosed bandicoot, exist in very isolated populations.
Above: An aerial photo of the Sugarloaf area with a data overlay that shows the range of the different vegetation communities that grow there.
Both study sites are located within the "Coastal Sandstone Gully Forest" community.
