Lesson 2 - Human adaptations

Lesson 2 - Human adaptations

Learning intention

We are learning to describe adaptations.

Success criteria

We can define the word adaptation.

We can identify adaptations of the human body that help us survive.

Activity 1

Human adaptations | Field of Mars EEC (3:27 min) | Video transcript | YouTube

How can we use our own bodies to learn what an adaptation is?

An adaptation is a feature of a living thing that helps it survive in its environment.

Homo Sapiens are commonly known as humans. All humans have the same basic body structures and use them in very similar ways.

Activities

  • Describe the function of one adaptation. If you need help, review the list of suggested structures and behaviours.
  • Write a brief explanation of how you think the adaptation helps us survive in our environment. Refer to the student work sample.

Extension activity

  • Read the student work sample.
  • Reflect on the following questions:
What are the strengths and weaknesses of the explanation provided?
How did your short explanation compare to the sample?
