People, patterns and processes
Study 3: Place and cultural change
Year 11 (2024)
This program supports 'Study 3: Place and cultural change' for the topic 'People, patterns and process'. This excursion leads students through an investigative case study of place and cultural change in a vibrant multicultural and modern suburb in inner Sydney - Marrickville.
Students are introduced to the cultural identity of Marrickville by engaging in sensory and discovery fieldwork. Secondary sources will then be used to demonstrate how Marrickville has changed over time.
Enhanced by specialised instruments, students will conduct a comprehensive survey of the cultural characteristics of Marrickville. Students will use this data to examine how immigration and gentrification have influenced the cultural identity of Marrickville, as well as how wellbeing has been enhanced as part of the cultural landscape. By engaging on their own food tour, students are encouraged to immerse themselves in the culture of Marrickville first-hand over lunch. The investigation concludes by engaging with community members regarding their perceptions of culture and change.
This excursion will support students undertaking their Geographical Investigation in urban environments.
