Learning activities

Students role play being a park ranger. They will use maps for checking on the plants and animals in the reserve and creek, as well as observing the bridges and bushwalking tracks. Students will make an insect hotel to take back to school as a practical way of caring for nature.

Key questions

  • How can we work together to care for the Field of Mars Reserve?

  • How can we participate in caring for nature and natural places?

Fieldwork

Bushwalk

In role as park rangers, students will explore the Field of Mars Reserve considering how we can work together to care for and protect nature and the environment.

Through hands-on activities, students will explore ways park rangers can improve the environment for living things and people. The practices of the Wallumedegal Peoples in sustainably managing the environment will also be acknowledged.

Caring for the bush

Students investigate a section of the reserve identifying ways animals' needs are met and ways rangers and the local community care for places. They will design their own mini scale national park providing habitat for a range of animals and facilities for park visitors.

Build an insect hotel

Students will learn about the types of homes liked by some native insect species. Using materials and tools provided students will create an insect hotel to take back to school, one per class.

The insect hotel should be placed off the ground, hung on a wall or placed on a bench near a garden bed to provide a home for insects.
