S4 Classification and adaptations

Classification and adaptations

Science

Program commencing 2025

What is that? How do you know? What features does it have? How does it survive here? These questions will be explored as students conduct a series of fieldwork investigations into the classification and adaptations of living things in the Field of Mars Reserve.

Students will use dichotomous keys, a range of specialised scientific tools and instruments to observe and examine the structural features and adaptations of living things found in the Field of Mars Reserve. The hands-on investigations provide students with an opportunity to get up close and personal with local native plants and animals whilst developing their Working Scientifically skills of observation, quantitative data collection and data processing.

Through interactive activities on Country, students will explore traditional uses of plants and learn to classify plants through the lens of local Aboriginal Peoples.

This program aligns with the implementation of the new 7-10 Science (2023) syllabus for the Stage 4 topic Cells and Classification and can be used to support an assessment task or depth study.

Maximum 8 classes.
