This program supports 'Study 3: Place and cultural change' for the topic 'People, patterns and process'. This excursion leads students through an investigative case study of place and cultural change in a vibrant multicultural and modern suburb in inner Sydney - Marrickville.
Enhanced by fieldwork tools and specialised instruments, students engage in a range of sensory and discovery fieldwork techniques to examine the spatial and cultural characteristics of Marrickville. By engaging on their own food tour, students are also encouraged to immerse themselves in the culture of Marrickville first-hand. Students will use systematic and random sampling methods to investigate the influence of processes including migration and gentrification on place and people. Analysis of this data will enable students to make inferences relating to cultural continuity and change. Through experiential activities, students will examine council initiatives for enhancing wellbeing.
Fieldwork will be supported with secondary resources such as maps and photos.
The fieldwork techniques and instruments used will support students undertaking their Geographical Investigation in urban environments.
