Learning activities

Students will work in small groups to undertake geographic inquiry in the field.

Geographic questions that focus on the characteristics and influences of place and cultural change in an inner city location will be asked and data will be collected using different fieldwork and sampling techniques. This data will be analysed to identify the influences of past and current cultural change, and perceptions of and responses to these changes.

Fieldwork

Introduction

Students will assemble at Marrickville Library and be introduced to the day’s investigations.

Students will be introduced to the fieldwork inquiry questions for the day. Students will be guided through the planning process for fieldwork investigations including ethical considerations, equipment and methodologies and preparing for outdoor activities. Maps, diagrams and other secondary resources will be used to support student understanding.

Activity 1 - Cultural characteristics of Marrickville

Students will engage in sensory and discovery fieldwork activities to describe the cultural characteristics of Marrickville. Through mobile photography and fieldwork instruments including sound meters and rangefinders, students will investigate cultural elements of place such as architecture, streetscape, noise, and colour.

Activity 2 - Influences on cultural identity

Using observations, photography and fieldwork instruments, students will conduct an urban transect investigating changes in land use and architecture.

Students will be guided through the interpretation and analysis of their results to describe the influence of migration and gentrification on the cultural identity of Marrickville, and draw conclusions relating to cultural continuity and change.

Lunch

Students are encouraged to explore food as a medium for cultural change by undertaking a 'food tour', dining at local restaurants and cafes.

Activity 3 - Perceptions of and responses to change

Students will use random sampling and questionnaires to survey people on their perceptions of and responses to cultural continuity and change in the area.

Activity 4 - Future of Marrickville

Walking to Steel Park, students will observe, record and discuss initiatives to enhance environmental sustainability and human wellbeing. A focus on the role of the blue-green grid will be emphasised.
