Primary Science and Technology excursions and incursions | K–6 | Field of Mars EEC
Field of Mars Environmental Education Centre delivers hands-on Science and Technology learning through investigations in bushland, creeks and school grounds. Students observe living things, collect and interpret data, and communicate findings using fieldwork journals, models and digital tools. All programs support the new NSW Science and Technology K–6 Syllabus (2024).
Why choose Science and Technology at Field of Mars EEC?
- Teacher-led investigations aligned to the NSW Science and Technology syllabus
- Strong fieldwork skills: data collection, observation, simple testing, recording and explanation
- Place-based contexts: living things, habitats, ecosystems, life cycles and adaptations
What will students do?
- Observe, measure, classify, record, explain (with photos/data)
- Use field tools (e.g., dip nets, hand lenses, simple testing kits)
- Build scientific vocabulary (Tier 2/3)
Featured Science and Technology excursions and incursions
The secret life of birds excursion
Early Stage 1 | Science and Technology
Students investigate local birds by observing features and behaviours, then record and communicate findings using drawings, photos and simple data. Learning is grounded in Field of Mars Reserve habitats and builds early scientific vocabulary and classification skills.
Schoolyard safari incursion
Stage 1 | Science and Technology
Students conduct a school-based investigation to observe, classify and record invertebrates as evidence of living things and habitats. They use a guided photo walk and simple tools to document findings and explain patterns using scientific language.
Ecosystem explorers excursion
Stage 2 | Science and Technology
Students act as field scientists, collecting evidence about living and non-living components, food chains and habitat features in a bushland ecosystem. They represent and explain relationships using field journals, labelled diagrams and simple data recording.
AR adaptations incursion
Stage 3 | Science and Technology
Students use digital design and AR to model adaptations and justify how features support survival in particular environments. They communicate scientific reasoning through annotated designs and evidence-based explanations linked to real habitat challenges.
Science and Technology excursions by Stage
Early Stage 1 excursions
Play-based science experiences where students observe living things, explore materials and habitats with their senses, and talk about what they notice using simple scientific vocabulary.
Stage 1 excursions
Students investigate living things and their needs through guided observation and simple classification, recording evidence with pictures, labels and shared discussions.
Stage 2 excursions
Students conduct structured investigations in bushland and creek settings, collecting and comparing data about ecosystems, interactions and human impacts, then communicating findings using models and labelled diagrams.
Stage 3 excursions
Students apply fieldwork methods to investigate adaptations, survival and environmental change, using evidence to explain cause-and-effect and justify management strategies.
Science and Technology incursions by Stage
Early Stage 1 incursions
Play-based investigations where students observe local living things, describe needs and features, and record evidence through drawing, sorting and talk.
Stage 1 incursions
Hands-on investigations of living things and habitats in the school grounds. Students use simple tools to observe, classify and record findings using labels, tables or photos.
Stage 2 incursions
Ecosystem investigations using schoolyard sampling and data collection. Students identify interactions, represent findings (food chains/webs, annotated diagrams) and explain patterns using evidence.
Stage 3 incursions
Inquiry tasks focused on adaptations, survival and environmental change. Students collect evidence, develop explanations and communicate scientific thinking through structured multimodal products.
