Program overview
Geography fieldwork is a Stage 6 Geography incursion that develops fieldwork and data collection skills for Year 11 Geography – Earth’s natural systems. Using specialised fieldwork instruments, students investigate ecosystems in or near their school and apply biotic sampling and abiotic measurement methods to collect ecological data. The program supports mandatory Year 11 Geography fieldwork and helps students plan and conduct their own geographical investigations.
This program requires access to significant natural environments in or near your school. Access to nature reserves near your school will provide the richest learning experiences.
This program is also available for Stage 6 Science.

Activities
Fieldwork activities may be adapted to suit the local environment and available study sites.
Ecological sampling
Students use quadrats, line transects and belt transects to examine the distribution and abundance of vegetation and invertebrate species. Students compare random and systematic sampling methods and evaluate their purpose for fieldwork inquiry.
Abiotic testing
Students learn to use a range of specialised fieldwork instruments including thermometers, hygrometers, anemometers, light meters, soil moisture meters, and soil pH kits to measure abiotic factors which characterise the terrestrial ecosystem.
Water quality testing (optional)
Students examine aquatic ecosystem health in a local waterway. They use water quality testing equipment to measure dissolved oxygen concentration, turbidity, water temperature, pH and phosphate concentration. The data collected helps students identify relationships between water quality, ecosystem functioning, human activity and changed land use.
Explore related fact sheets
Use these student-friendly fact sheets before or after your Geography fieldwork incursion to support ecological sampling, abiotic testing, water quality investigations and local geographical inquiry.
- Habitat fact sheet – Learn how living and non-living features create places where organisms can survive.
- Eucalypt forest ecosystem fact sheet – Use a forest example to support fieldwork about abiotic factors, vegetation structure and ecosystem interactions.
- Water habitats fact sheet – Explore aquatic habitats that can support water quality investigations near schools.
- River and creek environment fact sheet – Learn how waterways, banks, flow, plants, animals and human impacts are connected.
- Invertebrate fact sheets – Explore small animals that can be sampled, classified and used as fieldwork evidence.
- Urban environments fact sheet – Compare school grounds and local places with broader urban environmental systems.
Program timetable
Learning activity |
