Program overview
Life cycles is a Stage 1 Science and Technology incursion where students investigate how invertebrates change as they grow. Working in small groups, students collect invertebrates from school habitats and use magnifiers and life-stage charts to identify specimens and sequence stages, with selected specimens magnified on a large screen for whole-class discussion.
This program is also available as an excursion at the Field of Mars Reserve.
Learning intentions
- We are learning to identify living things at different stages of their life cycle.
- We are learning to describe how living things change as they grow.

Activities
Activities may vary depending on student needs, timing and weather.
Invertebrate hunt
Students will work in small groups to find and collect invertebrates in your school grounds using a range of scientific equipment, such as leaf litter searches, tree shakes or sweep nets.
Invertebrate identification and life cycles
Collected invertebrates will be examined with personal magnifiers and identified using ID charts as well as life-stage charts. Select invertebrates will be magnified on a large screen, and their features and life cycles will be detailed and explained.
Students observe a live phasmid and learn its life cycle through an age-appropriate narrative. Students identify external features and discuss how these features help the animal survive, with an option for gentle, supervised handling.
Build a bug (2 hour sessions only)
Students use modelling material and loose natural items to create an invertebrate model based on a species they observed. Students include key external features and identify the life stage represented, then share their model and explain how living things change as they grow.
