Learning Intention
We are learning to explore and understand the life cycles of different plants and animals.

This Stage 1 science resource helps students learn about the life stages of plants and animals. Across ten activities with supporting videos and resources, students explore how plants grow from seeds, observe changes over time, create photo grids and identify the life stages of animals and invertebrates.

These activities can be used to support a Life cycles excursion or incursion.

Lesson 1 - Plant life stages

Students investigate how plants grow from seeds to adults by exploring examples such as tomato and hairpin banksia plants, then setting up a simple seed-growing experiment to observe changes over time.

Lesson 2 - Animal life stages

Students learn how animals grow and change by matching baby and adult animals, watching a video about frog metamorphosis and creating a photo grid showing the life stages of a pet or other animal.

Life cycles excursion

Students investigate life cycles of plants and animals through hands-on science activities, observing living things, their stages of growth and the conditions they need to survive.

Life cycles incursion

A hands-on incursion where students investigate life cycles of plants or animals, observe real specimens or models, and sequence the stages of growth and change.
