Lesson 2 - Animal life stages

Lesson overview

Students investigate how animals change as they grow. They begin by matching images of baby and adult animals using a life stage image gallery, then watch a short video showing how a tadpole transforms into a frog and retell the frog’s life stages as a story. Finally, students collect photos of a pet or another animal and create a photo grid that shows its life stages from young to adult.

Learning intention

We are learning how animals change as they grow.

Success criteria

We can recognise the different life stages of animals.

Activity 1 - How do animals grow and change?

Some animals such as humans, birds and snakes have simple life stages. When they are born they look similar to an adult.

Other animals, such as butterflies, beetles and frogs go through big changes to their body as they grow.

Tasks

Activity 2 - How do pets change as they grow?
