Secondary Science excursions and incursions | Stages 4–6 | Field of Mars EEC

Field of Mars EEC offers secondary science excursions and incursions for Stage 4 and Stage 6 students, aligned to the NSW 7–10 Science, Year 11 Biology and Year 11 Earth and Environmental Science syllabuses. Our fieldwork and incursion programs give students authentic opportunities to plan, conduct and analyse scientific investigations in natural environments — building understanding of ecosystems, adaptations, Earth’s resources and human impacts.

Stage 4 Science excursions and incursions

Fieldwork tools used to investigate classification and adaptations.

Classification and adaptations excursion

Stage 4 | Science

A series of fieldwork investigations into the classification and adaptations of native plants and animals. Students observe and engage with invertebrates, reptiles and native plants first-hand as well as specialist tools including dichotomous keys.

A possum and owl toy that are examples of animal interactions in an ecosystem.

Ecosystems excursion

Stage 4 | Science

A fieldwork excursion focusing on the role of urban bushland habitats for conserving a threatened species - the powerful owl. Students collect data on abiotic and biotic factors and construct a food web of a forest ecosystem.

Aboriginal tools that can be used to test forces.

Forces incursion

Stage 4 | Science

A hands-on incursion where students conduct experiments investigating the application of knowledge of forces by Aboriginal Peoples when using and constructing technologies and simple machines.

Stage 6 Science excursions

Fieldwork tools used during a Stage 6 biology excursion.

Ecosystem dynamics excursion

Stage 6 | Biology

A fieldwork case study evaluating the habitat suitability of a Sydney bushland site for long-nosed bandicoot populations. Students use sampling techniques to survey abiotic factors, biotic factors and human impacts, and use data to make informed management decisions.

Fieldwork tools used to test soil health during an Earth’s resources excursion.

Earth's resources excursion

Stage 6 | Earth and Environmental Science

A fieldwork investigation of the geology and vegetation of Hawkesbury Sandstone landscapes. Students learn scientific fieldwork methods to observe and measure rock and soil types, biotic and abiotic factors, and human impacts.

Fieldwork tools used to investigate human impacts in natural areas.

Human impacts and introduced species excursion

Stage 6 | Earth and Environmental Science

Students observe and identify introduced plants and animals affecting Sydney bushland ecosystems. Students conduct a comparative study of two sites to quantify and assess the environmental impact of invasive weeds and evaluate current management approaches.

Field work tools used to investigate natural areas.

Earth's resources and human impacts excursion

Stage 6 | Earth and Environmental Science

A combined Earth’s resources and human impacts fieldwork excursion supporting Modules 1 and 4 of the Year 11 Earth and Environmental Science syllabus, giving students an integrated investigation of geology, ecology and introduced species Hawkesbury Sandstone bushland ecosystems.
