Resource overview

Features of places is a primary geography learning resource from Field of Mars Environmental Education Centre that builds students’ ability to recognise and describe natural and built features in their school and local area. Through simple videos, outdoor observations and hands-on mapping tasks, students practising geographical language and create simple representations of place; the unit can be taught independently or used to support the Stage 1 Features of places excursion.

Lesson 1 - Where is Sugarloaf Hill?

Students explore maps and images to locate Sugarloaf Hill, recognise landscape forms and begin understanding how natural places are structured.

Lesson 2 - Features of places

Students learn to tell apart natural, managed and built features by examining pictures, school grounds or local places and practicing descriptive geographical vocabulary.

Lesson 3 - Observations

Students go on a short walk to observe and record features of their local area using drawing and fieldwork checklists, building observational and mapping skills.

Lesson 4 - Bush Creature

Students combine their learning by designing and constructing a bush creature art or model that reflects natural place-features and their local environment.
