We are learning about the features of natural places.
This Early Stage 1 resource helps students explore the natural and built features of places in their school grounds, local area and environment. Through simple videos, hands-on activities and outdoor observations, students learn how to recognise features, describe them using geographical language and create simple maps.
These lessons can be taught as a complete unit or used to support a Features of places excursion with Field of Mars Environmental Education Centre.
Lesson 1 - Where is Sugarloaf Hill?
Students explore maps and images to locate Sugarloaf Hill, recognise landscape forms and begin understanding how natural places are structured.
Lesson 2 - Features of places
Students learn to tell apart natural, managed and built features by examining pictures, school grounds or local places and practicing descriptive geographical vocabulary.
Lesson 3 - Observations
Students go on a short walk to observe and record features of their local area using drawing and fieldwork checklists, building observational and mapping skills.
Lesson 4 - Bush Creature
Students combine their learning by designing and constructing a bush creature art or model that reflects natural place-features and their local environment.
