Special places | Primary HSIE student learning resource

Learning Intention
We are learning to understand what makes places special.

These activities help Early Stage 1 students explore the special places in their lives – at home, at school and in the local environment. The resource includes seven simple, play-based activities with videos and downloadable resources that encourage children to notice natural features, create nature artworks, build cubbies, draw maps and follow the adventures of Frog.

These activities can be used on their own or to support a Special places excursion.

Lesson 1 - What's outside?

Students watch short nature videos, go outside with a nature bingo card to find bush treasures, and use what they collect to create simple nature artworks.

Lesson 2 - Going outside

Students listen to a story about animals, search for matching features in their own outdoor space, build a cubby and share a teddy bears’ picnic in a special place.

Lesson 3 - Frog's walk

Students follow Frog’s walk through different bushland places, then take a toy for a walk around school and draw a simple map to show their own special places.
