Program overview
Cinematographer is a one-day Stage 2 and Stage 3 English and Creative Arts HPGE enrichment program where students plan, film and edit persuasive environmental short films. Students analyse how campaign videos shape audience response, then use Field of Mars Reserve as a filming location to apply camera angles, composition, sound, text and transitions. Completed films communicate a clear message about the value of nature. HPGE domains: creative, intellectual.

- We are learning to use cinematography, editing and persuasive techniques to create a short environmental film for a specific audience and purpose.

Transport |
Schools are required to organise transport for students to and from the location. No vehicles are permitted into Field of Mars Reserve. |
Staff |
Teachers are not required to attend but are welcome. |
Student selection |
Maximum 12 students per school per day. When choosing your students, remember the program takes place indoors, outdoors and in public spaces. Students may be near creeks and bushland tracks. While EEC teachers supervise them all day, consider if they’ll need SLSO or teacher support to stay safe. |
Bring |
Sports uniform, backpack, medication, low-waste food, water bottle, sunblock, raincoat, hat, sturdy shoes, reusable name tag. |

Preparing for your excursion |
Welfare |
Participants will be walking during the day on an accessible boardwalk. Wheelchair accessible. May not suit recently unwell participants. For medical or special needs notify staff prior to program. |
Extreme or wet weather |
Program may be modified, postponed or cancelled due to predicted extreme temperatures, bush fire danger, heavy rainfall, high winds or dust storms. |

Activities
Pre-production
Students deconstruct an environmental campaign video to identify how camera angles, composition, editing, sound and persuasive language shape meaning. They plan their own short film by clarifying purpose, audience, message and key shots.
Cinematographer
Students use Field of Mars EEC iPads to film in different locations across Field of Mars Reserve. They apply cinematography techniques such as framing, perspective, shot size, camera movement and focus to capture purposeful footage.
Editor
Students review, sequence and edit their footage to shape a clear environmental message. They add text, soundtracks and transitions, then refine their short films to strengthen audience impact.
Theatre
Selected videos will be showcased in at the conclusion of the day. Parents are welcome to attend and celebrate student creativity and achievement.
All videos will be returned to school via Google Drive.
