Natural numbers

Natural numbers excursion

The eucalyptus woodlands and mangrove wetlands of the Buffalo Creek area offer a fantastic venue for applied hands-on outdoor mathematics. This early stage 5 excursion incorporates practical maths activities such as geometry, number plane, data collection and representation, right-angled triangles, area and volume, formulae, mapping, bearings and statistics. Each fieldwork activity has been set up as a simulation of the daily work performed by park rangers in the field. Students work in small teams using a variety of physical and digital tools and methods to work towards their solutions.

After the data has been collected and practical solutions calculated, students communicate mathematically by recording a series of videos using supplied iPads. Here they make sense of the setting, scenario, methods, tools and outcomes. These videos are shared with the school so teachers (and students) can critique their own skills of working mathematically.

Field of Mars can combine some of these activities into a rich assessment task that works at the appropriate level for your students. For best results we will need to see your school’s programs.
