Classification | Science student learning resource | Field of Mars EEC

Resource overview

Classification is a Stage 2 science learning resource from Field of Mars Environmental Education Centre that teaches students how and why scientists group living and non-living things. Across ten activities with videos and resources, students practise grouping by observable features, collect and classify invertebrates, use iNaturalist to identify organisms, and create their own classification keys.

Lesson 1 - Grouping things

Students explore why and how we classify by watching a short video, examining examples of classification keys and grouping leaves and everyday objects based on observable features.

Lesson 2 - Classification keys

Students learn how to construct and use simple branching classification keys, then create their own key to classify a collection of everyday items.
